I have read many blogs and heard so many opinions on why some people jailbreak and why some say it’s a bad idea. Well let me give you my reasons for jailbreaking and why I will always continue to until there just isn’t a need for it anymore (which is completely up to Apple).
Jailbreaking the iPhone using blackra1n is the easiest jailbreak to date and takes the hard part out of it and you don’t even have to restore your iPhone, so no losing any data. Once the phone is jailbroken there are 2 things I install right away: 1) OpenSSH and 2) SBSettings.
- OpenSSH gives me the ability to SSH into my phone and add themes, ringtones or any type of file that I choose from my computer.
- SBSettings is
“a Swiss Army Knife in terms of its functions, but the killer one is still the ability to have instant one-swipe access to a set of On/Off toggles for many critical (and battery draining) services – WiFi, 3G, Bluetooth, SSH etc.” - (quoted by Patrick from JustAnotheriPhoneBlog.com)
Once I have access to my root drive on my phone through OpenSSH I then have the ability to add all the themes that I have made for Winterboard and PogoPlank. So naturally next up is Winterboard and PogoPlank.
- PogoPlank is now my second favorite thing about my iPhone. It’s a SpringBoard replacement for the iPhone and it has won me over. I won’t do it justice in trying to explain it so here is what the BigBoss Site has to say about it:
“PogoPlank ($1.99 in CydiaStore) replaces the traditional iPhone “Pages of Icons” with a “Wheel of Categories”. Each category has a user defined name and list of applications contained within using the PPSettings app. Once all categories are configured, a user can then scroll through the wheel to the category they like, tap the folder and see a list of applications in that category which they can choose to launch.”
I highly encourage you to read the review of PogoPlank over at
JustAnotheriPhoneBlog.com. They have given it a great overview.
- WinterBoard gives me the ability to theme my iPhone. I currently make all my own themes aside from the 1 or 2 I find on cydia that I like (I am really picky).
Then I can start getting my iPhone set up the way I believe it was meant to be. Next up would be mQuickDo and qTweeter. Both apps are amazing and have made my iPhone easier and much more fun to use.
- mQuickDo is in essence an app switcher and its something I now depend on. It also lets you pick app shortcuts on the lock screen, which is incredibly handy for myself. Here is a quick video to show you what mQuickDo does.
- qTweeter is a quick Twitter status update app. It runs in the background and all it takes is one quick swipe down from the menu bar and your status can quickly be typed in and set free to roam the twitter world. It is the easiest and smoothest way to update Twitter (and it does facebook as well).
From here we continue on with the apps I use on a Jailbroken phone.
- Backgrounder is a must have for me. Backgrounder is exactly what it states, it lets you run apps in the background. You do have the ability to be app specific, which comes in handy for apps like Awaken or WhiteNoise from the App Store.
- QuickReply for SMS lets you reply to any SMS without leaving the current app. Then it quickly goes back into hiding. BiteSMS is something I am currently testing to see if I like it better but for now QuickReply is still my #1.
These are the apps that now makes it almost impossible for me to use a stock iPhone. These apps should be included on the iPhone in my opinion, they make things so much easier and makes my phone much faster to use. Alot of people say that they won’t jailbreak due to battery drain, well I am running a 3Gs I don’t experience that at all nor does it slow my processing power.
So is jailbreaking the iPhone worth it to me. The answer is: Yes.
